Download Netflix Movies on Windows PC

Netflix's native Windows app supported offline downloads for years. But Netflix retired that app on July 25, 2024 and replaced it with a lightweight Microsoft Edge-based web app that simply loads netflix.com. The new app does not support downloads at all.

So if you want offline Netflix on a PC in 2026, you need one of these workarounds:

Method 1: Use a dedicated Netflix downloader

A dedicated Netflix downloader can save videos as standard MP4 or MKV files, giving you more flexibility for offline playback. Unlike official Netflix downloads, these files are not locked inside the Netflix app and can be moved to compatible devices. (Learn more in Part 6.)

Method 2: Roll back to the old Netflix app

If you don't mind running an emulator like BlueStacks, LDPlayer, or MEmu, you can install the Android Netflix app on your PC and use its built-in downloads. It works, but it is resource-heavy, quality is capped, and files stay locked inside the emulator. The same expiration rules also apply.

Method 4: Screen record

You can also capture the video with a screen recorder while it streams. Download Netflix Movies on Mac

There has never been a native Netflix app for macOS. Mac users have always watched through Safari, Chrome, or Firefox, and browsers don't support downloads. So your options mirror the PC situation:

Download Netflix Movies on Chromebook

Chromebooks are one of the few laptop-style devices that support official Netflix downloads. If your Chromebook has access to the Google Play Store and can install the Netflix app, you can download selected movies and shows for offline viewing.

Can You Download Netflix Movies on a Web Browser?

No. Netflix downloads are not available from netflix.com in a normal desktop or mobile browser. A browser can stream Netflix, manage your account, and play videos online, but it does not provide an official offline download button.

After downloading movies or shows from Netflix, many users wonder where these files are stored and whether they can be moved to another device or storage drive. The short answer is that official Netflix downloads are designed to stay inside the Netflix app, but here is how the storage works.

Official Netflix downloads are stored in hidden, app-protected folders and you won't find them in your regular Movies or Downloads folder:

Storage locations:

Can You Transfer Netflix Downloads to USB?

Official Netflix downloads cannot be transferred to a USB drive as playable video files. You may be able to move app storage on some Android devices or use SD card storage where Netflix allows it, but that does not turn the download into a portable movie file.

To play Netflix content from a USB drive on a TV, car screen, or another computer, official downloads won't work because they are locked to the Netflix app. You need to convert the Netflix videos to MP4 or MKV format before transferring them to the USB. Can You Save Netflix Downloads to an External Drive?

Official downloads cannot be transferred. Attempting to do so will result in a DRM restriction. Netflix download limits depend on your Netflix plan, device, and the licensing rules for each title. Make sure you are aware of those limits so you can get the most out of your downloads.

How Many Netflix Downloads Can You Have?

The number of Netflix titles you can download depends on your plan and the content license. In general:

Ad-Supported Plans: Downloads are limited to 15 titles per device each calendar month, and downloads are available on up to 2 devices.
Ad-Free Plans (Standard/Premium): You can typically keep up to 100 active downloads per device. Standard allows downloads on up to 2 devices, while Premium supports up to 6 devices.

Notes:

There is also a per-title download limit. Some movies or shows can only be downloaded a certain number of times within a year because of licensing agreements. Netflix may not show this limit until you reach it.
When you hit a cap, you'll see messages like "You have too many downloaded videos" or "You have downloaded on too many devices". For ad-free plans, deleting old downloads or removing unused devices can help free up download slots.
According to the Netflix Help Center, deleting downloads does not reset the monthly download limit for ad-supported plans. Users on these plans must wait until the 1st of each month for their allowance to refresh, or choose to upgrade to ad-free plans.

How Long Do Netflix Downloads Last?

Two clocks are running on every download:

Before watching: Many downloads expire within 7–30 days after being downloaded.
After starting playback: Once you press play, the download may expire after 48 hours.

There are also a few situations where downloads can disappear earlier. For example, if Netflix no longer has the rights to a title, the downloaded video may be removed from your device. Downloads can also become unavailable if your subscription expires or you sign out for an extended period.

How to Download Netflix Movies as MP4/MKV with VidiFab
